Overview

GRP (Glass Reinforced Plastic) spray headers are piping systems commonly used in industrial applications, particularly in chemical processing, water treatment, and other environments where corrosive fluids are handled. These spray headers distribute fluids (such as water, chemicals, or gases) in a controlled manner within towers or reactors, especially in processes like cooling, washing, or scrubbing.

Flue Gas Desulfurization (FGD) systems are used to remove sulfur dioxide (SO₂) from the exhaust flue gases of fossil-fuel power plants and industrial processes. A crucial component of the wet FGD system is the spray header. Spray headers are installed in the absorber towers, and their main function is to spray slurry (usually a mixture of water and limestone or other reagents) into the gas stream for efficient contact and chemical reaction with sulfur dioxide.

These spray headers are often used in conjunction with other non-metallic column internals to ensure the even distribution of liquids over packed beds or other internals.

Fiberglass GRP – GRP Spray Banks are used on WFGD plants, into absorbers having a diameter from Ø 5000 mm to Ø 25000 mm.

Material Construction

  • Corrosion Resistance: Since FGD systems handle corrosive gases, the spray headers are made from corrosion-resistant materials such as high-grade stainless steel (316L, 904L), FRP (Fiber-Reinforced Plastic), or special alloys like Hastelloy.
  • Abrasion Resistance: Slurry contains suspended solids that can cause abrasion, so the material used must also resist wear over time

Function

  • The spray header delivers an evenly distributed flow of reagent slurry into the gas stream, where it reacts with SO₂ to form gypsum (CaSO₄·2H₂O), which can then be removed.
  • It maximizes gas-liquid contact, ensuring efficient desulfurization and reducing sulfur emissions.
