GRP Spray Headers for Efficient FGD System Performance

FRP GRP Spray Headers

GRP spray headers, also referred to as glass-reinforced plastic spray headers, are a class of piping systems widely used in industrial processes. These include chemical processing, water treatment, and other industries where fluids need to be fed under controlled conditions. They are constructed to distribute water, chemicals, or gases in towers or reactors and are highly effective for cooling, washing, or scrubbing applications.

Spray headers in flue gas desulfurization facilities, designed for the removal of sulfur dioxide from the flue gases emitted through fossil fuel burning, play an important role. Situated inside absorber towers, their fundamental task is to spray a slurry solution, most commonly made of water and limestone or another chemical reagent, into the gas stream. This brings about the chemical reaction that flushes sulfur dioxide out of the emissions.

These spray headers often incorporate portions of the other non-metal internals to give an even and consistent spread of fluids over internal tower designs or packed beds. This heightens the process’s efficiency and overall performance.

Wet FGD plants utilize fiberglass GRP spray banks in absorber towers with diameters from five thousand millimeters to twenty-five thousand millimeters.

Material Construction
To counter corrosive and abrasive use, GRP spray headers are constructed using materials that have high resistance. Most common is the use of high-quality stainless steel such as 316L and 904L, fiber-reinforced plastic, and specialty alloys like Hastelloy. These items are selected not merely for corrosion resistance but also for their endurance against wear caused by abrasive slurry content.

Function
The role of the spray header is to deliver an even stream of reagent slurry to the gas stream. This ensures effective contact with sulfur dioxide, leading to the formation of gypsum. The even pattern of spray enhances the process of chemical reaction to enable optimum interaction between the liquid and the gas and a great lowering of sulfur emissions.

Frequently Asked Questions About FRP /GRP Spray Headers

FRP or GRP spray headers are used in absorber towers of FGD systems to evenly spray slurry into the gas stream. This helps remove sulfur dioxide from flue gases by ensuring efficient contact between the gas and the reagent.

GRP spray headers are highly resistant to corrosion, making them ideal for handling aggressive chemicals and acidic gases commonly found in FGD and chemical processing applications.

Yes, these spray headers are built to resist abrasion caused by slurries containing suspended solids, which helps extend their operational life in demanding environments.

Yes, GRP spray headers can be engineered to fit various absorber tower diameters, ensuring proper spray coverage and system performance.

GRP spray headers require minimal maintenance due to their corrosion and abrasion resistance. Regular inspection is recommended to ensure spray patterns remain consistent.

By distributing slurry evenly across the gas flow, GRP spray headers enhance gas-liquid contact, which improves the overall efficiency of sulfur dioxide removal.
